The winter hike was from 1/12 – 1/14 at the Withalacochee state park. All scouts are invited to attend this camp out. We hiked 10 miles the first day in about 80*F to get to our campsite. Overall it was a success, all the newer scouts did excellent with only a few needing temporary assistance. Once we got there we purified some water from the river using an assortment of gear including SteriPens,Gravity filtration systems, and iodine tablets. Once we filtered our water we went back to camp to rest. The next day we did a cleanup and some of us went to the ‘Baby Grand Canyon’ while the rest just waited at the campsite. The scouts who went to the ‘Baby Grand Canyon’ walked around an extra 3 miles (round-trip and without packs.) When the scouts who went to the ‘Baby Grand Canyon’ came back we hiked about 100 yards to apart in the river we were going to cross. We had Mr. Friedlander walk across the river with a rope to mark the path. Then some of the older scouts spread out at intervals in the river to help keep the others on the path. Once the newer scouts had made it across safely the older scouts and adults hauled backpacks across the river to redistribute to their owners. We then hiked about another mile to get to the cars. It was a very fun and successful trip.
