Updates from the Scoutmaster – July 2013

Hello Troop 22 and web site Visitors !

This has been an exciting and action packed summer for our troop !

In June, our troop brought 38 Scouts to summer camp at Woodruff, located in Blairsville, GA. About a dozen new Scouts completed the Mountain Man program, which sets them on the way to Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks. Everyone completed several merit badges, including many Eagle required badges. Looks like more Troop 22 Eagles will be soaring above Tampa Bay in the near future.

We had 2 adult leaders complete the Scoutmaster training course at Woodruff, so we have added 2 officially trained leaders to our roster. All of the 12 adult leaders in attendance kept busy with helping to manage the troop, but we also found time for some hiking, fishing, and other fun activities.

This July we sent a contingent of 10 Scouts from our troop to the 2013 BSA National Jamboree. National Jamboree events occur once every 4 years. This one in particular was the first at the Summit Bechtel Scout Reserve, which is a new BSA high adventure camp in West Virginia. With over 50,000 Scouts from around the world in attendance – together with whitewater rafting, zip lining, rock climbing, mountain biking, camping, merit badges and other high adventure activities – this will surely be a once in a lifetime experience for our attending Scouts.

During the summer, our adult leaders have been discussing and making plans for the upcoming Scout year. As always, these discussions and the resulting plans are geared towards the aims of Scouting – Character, Citizenship, and Fitness. We do our best to organize our troop to align with these aims, and to also plan service projects, unique outdoor and camping events, and leadership opportunities that will help our Scouts grow into better citizens and leaders. This upcoming Scout year will prove to be exciting, challenging, fun, and a great growth opportunity for our Scouts.

Also coming up…during 2014 spring break (March 10 – 14), we will be taking 15 Scouts and 8 adult leaders to the BSA Sea Base high adventure camp. This camp, held in the Florida Keys, will include a week of water based activities, including swimming, snorkeling, fishing, sailing, motor boating, and island exploration. It also includes a day trip to Key West…sounds like it’s going to be a blast !!
