For those Scouts new to our troop, a BSA-required swim test must be completed prior to attending the camp out. The test is relatively simple, with each Scout swimming 75 yards on his front, followed by 25 yards on his back, then floating in the pool. Dates for the swim test are 6:30pm on Tuesday, March 22 and Thursday, March 31 at the University of Tampa pool. University of Tampa campus map can be downloaded here. Recommended parking is in the Thomas Garage on North B Street, which you can easily find from North Boulevard. It’s the first light north of Kennedy Boulevard. From there, walk east toward Plant Hall. Sykes Business School will be on your left and the pool (#9 on the map) is located behind this building.

On Saturday, April 2nd, Troop #22 has the rare opportunity to camp out beneath the loom of the lighthouse on historic Egmont Key. The Egmont Key Lighthouse was first built in 1854 and sits

amongst the ruins of Fort Dade which, along with Fort Desoto, guarded the entrance to Tampa Bay during Spanish-American War. In addition to the interesting history of the remaining structures including the red brick roads, gun batteries and old guard house, Egmont Key is also a National Fish & Wildlife Refuge, so there are many sea and wading birds to observe in their natural habitat. Along with skills development, fishing and exploring, there may be an opportunity for some community service hours. All-in-all, it should be a fun, exciting and interesting camp-out.

Our troop will meet at the church Saturday, April 2nd, at 07:45 and depart for Fort Desoto at 08:00 sharp!
Being late and potentially missing the ferry is not an option. We will then be transported from the Fort Desoto Boat Ramp Docks to the Pilot Station on Egmont Key by the Egmont Key Ferry. The cost will be $25.00 and includes a hamburger cookout (veggie burgers will be available) Saturday night. We will return on the Egmont Key Ferry at 1430 (2:30PM) Sunday and arrive back at the church parking lot approximately 15:45 (3:45PM).

Scouting for food – 2011

Every year, instead of eating hotdogs at the Bayshore Little league opener, we set out on an early Saturday morning to hang plastic bags on front doors of every house on Davis Islands and select streets of Hyde Park. Residents are requested to place non-perishables foods in the bags and leave them outside a week later for pick-up by
