20-Miler

Yesterday, four scouts (Willy, Stephen G, Txanton and Joey P. and 2 adults (myself, Mr. Widoff, and Mrs. Widoff) were ushered off by chairman, Jay Gadsby, on their way to complete one of the tougher requirements of the eagle required, hiking merit badge; the 20 mile (one day) hike.
Planning was completed Friday night, analyzing the weather and number of hours in the day to determine what was needed and when we would start. The trip started on Davis Islands, went through Channelside and up to Ybor City across to Tampa Heights then up to South Seminole Heights. After a short stop for lunch, we headed south along the Hillsborough River to the Tampa Museum of Art, up and around University of Tampa, down through Hyde Park to Bayshore Blvd then back up and onto Davis Islands. Again, Mr. Gadsby showed up (as if he had never left) to push us the final 1.5 miles

It was a great day, with many highs and physical challenges. We experienced a lot of Tampa including the new riverside greenway walkways near the new History Museum where we saw porpoises to some of the oldest cemeteries in Tampa, Woodlawn Cemetery, dating back to the area’s first settlers. I encourage anyone who has not done this so far to retrace our steps and complete this for yourself.

I have been playing with an number of GPS mapping and tracking apps in preparation for this hike. First off, http://www.mapmywalk.com, has some great tools to create your route (http://www.mapmywalk.com/routes/view/26178246) and my iphone app, motionx GPS, does a really cool job at tracking and sharing during. My only downfall was that the tracking app needed to stay on the whole time and my iphone battery died halfway through. The solar power charger I borrowed (thank you, Mr. Fatica) did not seemed to work, and may be the answer. That or an extended battery pack or both.
